OSF New Feechars!

Yes, sadly my latent addiction to the internets website icanhascheezburger.com is now spilling over into my real life, manifesting itself in my liberal use of lolcat speak ANYWHERE I either utter or write words. If we’re on IM and I make some strange pluralisation of a word that does not need it (e.g. “I’m like milky cereals”) or has terribly fricked-up grammar (also see previous e.g.) now you know why. Do not correct me. P.S. Favourite one so far? This one. It’s a double-whammy spit-roast orgy of visual humour.

In other news, I watched “Peaceful Warrior” yesterday. Whilst I can nod somewhat sagely along with the rabid critics who’ve been touting this movie as “important for the soul” or whatever bullshite, I can’t help but draw hundreds of parallels between this movie and Karate Kid.

Karate Kid is essentially the story of a child overcoming his inner demons going on to climactically triumph over adversity - a lost sheep, taken in by a wise, Japanese guru figure (in the form of the humble, pidgin-English speaking Mr. Miyagi) who trains the boy in the ways of the classical Japanese fighting spirit where mind and body are one.

Peaceful Warrior, then, is essentially the story of a child overcoming his inner demons going on to climactically triumph over adversity - a lost sheep, taken in by a wise, Japanese guru figure (in the form of a clearly blind-drunk and almost inaudibly gruff Nick Nolte, reprising his role from “Down and Out in Beverly Hills”) who trains the boy in the ways of the classical Japanese fighting spirit where mind and body are one. With a fantastical amount of waffly, existential armchair philosophy thrown in for good measure.

The only points that really distinguish either movie are Karate Kid’s brilliant 80s soundtrack and Peaceful Warrior’s subtle, male gymnastics-themed homo-eroticism. Thusly it’s a tough call as to which is better.

New Features on Open Source Food!

Ah yes there was actually a reason for this post. There are a couple of new features on OSF that are worth mentioning on this blog.

Recipe Licenses

Now you can - if you wish - attach a Creative Commons license to any of your recipes, that will allow people to reuse the text / image according to the license you set. Personally I’m going to be using the wiki license for all my recipes, which means anyone can use my images or text for pretty much any purpose, as long as they attribute it to me. More info about the licenses can be found here:

http://www.opensourcefood.com/about#licenseinfo

Recipe Blog Widget

This is pretty awesome. Now anyone can blog a recipe they find on OSF simply by hitting the “blog this” button on each one.

blog this

You’ll get a block of code to copy & paste (just like when you embed a youtube video on your blog) and when you paste that in your blog you’ll see the recipe widget of that recipe. The recipe widget is nice and simple, with the same clean design that you’ve come to expect from OSF. It shows the title and author of the recipe, with a lovely big picture. The really cool thing is the “view recipe” tab, which when you click, slides up and shows you the recipe text for that recipe. So if you put this on your blog, your readers don’t have to leave the page to see the recipe text. Pretty nice, right?

Here are some examples. And I’d like to say at this point that I’ve been STUNNED at the quality of some of the food on OSF. There is some real talent on the site and I’m so happy they are using it. Hopefully new features like this recipe widget will make the site even more useful to them, and help spread the word about their amazing skills in the kitchen.

First up, here’s some beautiful recipes from the amazing rachel.
