I wonder what exciting new job I could have!!!!!?????????questionmark

  1. I’m unemployed suddenly, too. Can you get me a job starting Wednesday? Relocating to Japan (Ibaraki) is not a problem. Nice jacket.

  2. What, did you quit?

  4. If you’re unemployed, maybe you’ll have a bit of time to answer an e-mail I sent about two weeks back. cough

I mean, here’s to bigger and better things with smart suits and shiny, shiny Macs! Hooray for food reviews and other things that glow happily on my monitor.

    yongfook / October 31st, 2006
  10. Good to see you’re still alive, YK (and Fuckstress, and I’m sure Guig is around somewhere).

The ironic timing of your post is mindbending, as I’m currently writing the essay for my JET programme application thingy. I must admit it’s not easy, I’m struggling to write anything beyond, “I’m a 31 year old IT professional, fire me to come talk to students for a year, suckle off your government’s teat and do it with your women.”

    Sciby / October 31st, 2006

    nathan / November 1st, 2006
  19. So are you becoming self-employed or something? I thought that first off, but then if your little online gadgets are free, how are you making money? I’m confused. But the words ‘new job’ have a hyperlink to your jonkenpon site so…

Anyway if you are indeed starting your own company with this other guy… good one! And good luck.

    Lloyd / November 1st, 2006
  20. Wow, ballsy move. I like it. I can’t wait to be showered in waves upon waves upon tsunami(s) of online utilities.

So…can we see your business plan? And…need a programmer? Oh, and does ‘ken’ have a blog?

  22. Congrats on your entrepreneuric adventures. Isn’t jonkenpon rock, paper, scissors in Japanese? I swear someone told me that once.

    Joey / November 2nd, 2006
  23. “Isn’t jonkenpon rock, paper, scissors in Japanese?”

    Yes. Yes, it is.

    Fat_Gaijin_Slapper / November 2nd, 2006
  24. actually rock, paper, scissors is “jankenpon” in Japanese. Thusly, “jonkenpon” is like a hilariously clever play on words.

    yongfook / November 2nd, 2006
  25. U R HOT!

  27. Hope all goes well with your new entrepreneurial challenge. It’s been awesome to see how far your blog has evolved since your days in the inaka, and I’m looking forward to seeing what jonkenpon has to offer.

I ended up finishing up with JET over the summer, and have just started Grad school at Teikyo Uni in Hachioji, on the west side of your `hood (AKA: Metropolitan Tokyo.) Keep us posted with when your next presentation at PechaKucha will be.

  32. Hey, when bummed about being a 9 to 5 professional out of work, think of the plight of the New York liberal arts college graduate sharing a one room apartment in Brooklyn with three people and no idea of how they are going to use their lack of major in getting a job. Or, in my case, if they will simply fall into the Russian Jewish curse of becoming a computer programmer despite the uselessly expensive education. Yep, not only would a major be useless to me (in philosophy, history, and literature), I don’t even have one. So yeah, take heart or something in remembering you use your mac for other purposes than downloading random shit on wikipedia or whatnot.

    Dina / November 6th, 2006
  33. Getting a degree in Computer Programming IS ridiculously expensive…and a source of mental anguish.

    David-MTL / November 7th, 2006
  34. FOOD REVIEW FOOD REVIEW FOOD REVIEW FOOD REVIEW

Yeah yeah busy schmusy. Ah shame, that’s probably pronounced shmoosey. The effect is ruined.

    sinner / November 11th, 2006
  38. I am going to hazard a guess that whatever secret “excting new job!!!” yongfook is working on is keeping him far too busy to update this blog. When he DOES update it, however, I’m sure it will be filled with much exciting news, which I personally would find more interesting than a food review.

    I look forward.

    Fat_Gaijin_Slapper / November 14th, 2006
  39. Yes but that’s because you’re a fat gaijin slapper. With big nerdy glasses.

    Lloyd / November 15th, 2006

  42. FGS - way to take a fake childish argument and start a REAL childish argument.

    Lloyd / November 16th, 2006
  43. Plus, I suppose I did want to annoy you seeing as you (once again mis-)read everyone elses’ complaints as being real ones. You were really sucking yf cock.

    Lloyd / November 16th, 2006
  44. Good grief, nothing real was started whatsoever! Merely a good-natured continuation of the already-started FAKE childish argument. I don’t think I’m the one misreading things here!

As for sucking YF’s cock, I think scott wants that job more than I.

    Fat_Gaijin_Slapper / November 16th, 2006
  45. Addendum: While we have obviously rubbed each other the wrong way, can we agree not to continue agruing? I’m not looking to start fights on someone else’s blog.

    Fat_Gaijin_Slapper / November 16th, 2006
  46. Yes you are. You come in here peddling your wares… and I’m not sure I fully believe you. In any case I care less than a flying yf so TRUCE!!!! You fat slapper. Seriously though, I hate arguing with posh-talking folks. TRUCE!!!!

  56. Okay well if you’re not going to write a food review you could at least post us a few words about how your new ventures are going… well?

    Lloyd / November 25th, 2006
  57. Lloyd…woah you blog here more than I do.

All is well in the world of Yongfook. Some of you had trouble understanding that I’m not really unemployed (by “some of you” I mean those of you who come here, look at the post titles, look for naked pics and then leave). I never was unemployed-unemployed, there was simply a 3 day limbo period between jobs where I had no employment. I had, of course, something set up - the preparation of which can be traced back by a good few months. I am now working at jonkenpon and have been for the last month or so. Jonkenpon - which, unless you are Jester to the Royal Court of Retardus, you will have worked out is my new venture - is going well and naturally I’ve been busy with the set up of servers, interviewing hot, skankily-dressed and woefully under-qualified women to be administrative assistants, and also starting work on our first couple of projects. Very soon we’ll be launching the Jonkenpon blog so more info when that time comes.

Other than that, things are also fairly hectic in my personal life. I’m moving apartments and have been on what seems like this perennial cycle of being introduced to really shit places that I thoroughly dislike, or being shown awesome apartments that I take 2 days to think over, decide to take, then discover that they were taken by some psychic fucking apartment-hunter about 5 seconds after I left the building.

Also, fueled by PS3 / Wii frenzy and being unable to purchase either (due to them being sold out or, in the case of the Wii, not even released here yet - whodathunkit, Nintendo releasing to the rest of the world first? Cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria etc) I, in a fit of next-gen gaming lust, bought an Xbox 360. And so far I’ve been pretty damn happy with it. Gears of War is a beautiful and awesome game, and playing online and hearing other players actually talking to each other is delightfully bizarre - and slightly depressing when I realise that all the other players are 12 year old boys who call each other “bitch” and have screen names that ReAd lykE tH1S.

    Anyhoo, will be updating some…time…soon…

    yongfook / November 26th, 2006
  58. Under-qualified to be administrative assistants? What in the world do you want you them to do — write 15-page reports analysing company performance whilst filing and making coffee?

    a / November 28th, 2006
  59. Yay my stalking paid off!

And I don’t have my crappy job anymore! Awesome! Nice to hear things are going rather well at your end of the world. Power to you, Mr Yongfook. It’s a brave thing you’re doing. Good one!

    Lloydy / November 28th, 2006
  60. hot, skankily-dressed … whaddaya mean underqualified?

    nishah / November 29th, 2006

  63. no food review… how about a wii review!

    scotty / December 13th, 2006
  64. Too busy playing it.

No, seriously though I’m actually RIGHT in the middle of my move and I’m on one side of Tokyo and my Wii and TV are on the other side of Tokyo, at the moment. All my stuff gets delivered on Sunday afternoon.

  66. how’s the apato situ in Tokyo these days? I rented a 30sqm 1DK near Hirou for 11万, 1995-2000.

Agents still breaking renter’s balls on nonrefundable deposits and stuff? Is the inverted population pyramid beginning to increase apt vacancies in the big city?

    Troy / December 14th, 2006
  67. The javascript fade-in was very cool, but I wrote 11-man not 11万.

    Troy / December 14th, 2006
  68. Sounds about right for Hiro. A 30sqm apartment anywhere in that area (Hiro / Ebisu / Shibuya) will run you around 11~14-man a month, unless you’re renting a crumbly shithole from the showa era.

The deposit thing is getting better. The “rei-kin” non-refundable deposit is verrrrrrry slowwwwly being phased out and a lot of newer buildings (i.e. those owned by corporations) don’t ask for them. Privately held or smaller buildings still require them 90% of the time.

I just moved to a new place near Ginza and I paid no rei-kin (brand new building). Paid 2 months shiki-kin (refundable deposit) but that’s normal. Along with all other expenses (agents fee, 1st month rent, insurance etc) it cost me about 750′000-yen to start the new lease. So it’s still a complete bastard to move apartments but not as much as it used to be. And if you look around you can find some good deals on the newer buildings.

    yongfook / December 15th, 2006
  69. That photograph reeks of professionalism. Was the shot setup with any lighting utilities or props? Was it edited digitally post?
