It’s now 3am and I’ve whipped up this podcast in about 2 hours. Had absolutely no time this week, thanks to my ridiculous working hours and my penchant for spending all my free time drinking myself to sleep sweet sweet sleep.

Oh and to everyone wondering where guig was on this episode, he was off having some kind of vacation up north. Guig lives on the other side of Japan and our lives are largely independent (apart from the phone calls I keep getting that I assume are him, screaming “OMGOMGOMG SHE’S NOT BREATHING SHE’S NOT BREATHING!!! WHY DID WE MAKE “STRANGLE ME HARDER” THE SAFE WORD????”). It’s not that easy to coordinate yourself and guests to commit 1-2 hours of your free time to a recording. Obviously I want to do it as often as possible but since we all have our own lives to get on with, don’t expect there to be guests like guig every time.
I think you’ll like Kraagon, though.

Nice podcast, I liked the previous one better though. And no, modifying your voice is not a substitute for real guests (which you should do every podcast imho).
I liked the penisnews, it might be an interesting idea for a yongfook.com spin-off. Too bad the cockcast meme seems to have disappeared. What happened to the podcast call-in?

Ahh good times. I was sad that Guig/theJinx/the guy from theJinx.org/BHC wasn’t there. But all in all, nicely formatted and entertaining. Although I do wish it was the “standard” 20 minutes. Kragon is a great addition, do wish to hear more of him. Chaptbottom makes my balls rise up into my stomach. And not in the pleasant way.

Very smooth. I would not be shy in putting out these 10 minute casts in between the times you can get guests there. You are becoming immensely better at both eliminating dead air and maintaining an upbeat air with the music and character bits. Though I thought Lady Chapbottom was just between you, me, and that crazy night in Tokyo all those years ago.

You do realize that iTunes isn’t the only player out there, right? I can play the m4a’s just fine with mplayer (I get the still images too). If it plays or not in the browsers is totally dependent on what plugins the browser has.

“streaming”? Maybe you are getting confused. The reason I want people to subscribe with iTunes (or any podcast aggregator) is because they don’t have to come and physically download the file - their podcast software will just check automatically from time to time and if there is a new episode, the podcast software will download and play it. In no way does it “stream”.
It just makes so much more sense that way. If people want to come here and download a file from a physical link then they are doing things in a very archaic way. I’m willing to support those people for plain .mp3 links (as you are guaranteed pretty much that it will play in any browser that they happen to be using) but not for .m4a files. If you want to listen to the .m4a files - which is what you should be doing, as it’s the better option of the two, seeing as it’s smaller in size and has images - then you should be using a proper podcast aggregator that allows you to subscribe to feeds. I don’t give a monkey’s which one, I only mention iTunes as it’s the platform most people are familiar with.
I interpreted your “plays in the browser” as streaming (eg like with QuickTime videos, they literally play in the browser window and I’ve seen IE stream mp3s instead of saving them to hdd).
Maybe some people don’t want to run a podcast aggregator for just one podcast? Perhaps I’m alone in this situation. It doesn’t make sense that you want to support people who don’t use aggregators by supplying an mp3 link but no m4a… There’s nothing in the m4a format that ties it to an aggregator.
If the m4a is in fact smaller then why mp3 at all? Most people can play that, if not, they can always download the codec. Supplying a direct link would just save me the hassle of viewing the source of the podcast feed and copy-pasting the link.
I don’t need to be lectured on this kind of thing, really. I assure you that everything here is done for a reason.
I’m trying to cater for as many people as possible, but there is a limit.
I provide a direct .mp3 link as a “lowest common denominator” link - this is a file that everyone can play and everyone knows how to use.
I don’t provide an .m4a link as a direct download as I assume that people who do not understand how to use podcasting software and want a direct link are also probably the same people who do not understand how to download a new codec should they need it. Such a thing might be second nature to you, but others wouldn’t have a clue where to start. Hence I bypass all “hey I can’t get it to play!” comments from people who don’t know what they are doing.
It’s an assumption of course, and there are exceptions to the rule such as yourself - but since you are technologically savvy enough to look through the rss feed and grab the link by yourself, I really don’t see why I should confuse a whole bunch of people by offering two direct downloads, one of which I cannot guarantee will play on everyone’s computer.
Once podcasting becomes more popular and .m4a becomes a more widespread format, I will ditch .mp3. But it’s a bit too early for that - we are still in a kind of podcasting testing-ground limbo and there is not one perfect way to offer podcasting content to everyone, yet.
And just to really hit the hammer home - IE6+/Win seems to play .m4as just fine in the browser window.
However, Firefox/Win, Netscape/Win, Safari/Mac ad Firefox/Mac all attempt to play the .m4a file in the browser, and they can’t. I don’t want to alienate all those users (I mean, I like mac users - I am one).
Yes, I’m sure they could play the file if they right-click downloaded it and put it into their audio player, but by the time you’ve done that, don’t you feel that you might as well just subscribe and let all that be done for you??
I think the real problem here is the audio player you are using doesn’t support subscriptions to podcasts. If it did you wouldn’t be going through all this hassle.
Anyway, at the end of the day you can all listen to it and you are all getting something for nothing - so enough with the telly yongy fooky how to run his sitey.

Nothing to do with your podcast … but I just visited your flickr site and damn, you take good pictures. Are you using the Canon 20D model? What lens are you using (I’m assuming you didn’t stick with the 50mm)? I’m in the process of buying my first DSLR, think Canon 20D is a good investment?
yes I’m using a Canon 20D.
To be honest I don’t think there is a massive difference in picture quality between for example, the 350D and the 20D. Not for regular shooting anyway.
Good optics affect the quality of your photo in a much more immediately detectable way than simply having more megapixels or better white balance management etc etc. So you could save some money by buying the 350D and investing in a few really good lenses (like the expensive-but-awesome L series range).
Build quality is the only real noticeable difference. The 20D is built much better and feels more solid (it has a metal frame). The 350D is very plasticky, and feels a bit like a toy.
I’ve been helpfully vague, as usual.
Just get the best that you can afford. I suppose the best tactic is to buy a good body first, since you can always buy more lenses later.
I can’t believe what a cruel, cruel man you are! First you waste 1 minute of my life by forcing me to dig through html to get the m4a link. AND THEN you waste another 20 minutes with the podcast itself! And this entire discussion has stolen even more precious minutes that I could have spend masturbating.

speaking of wich: spend money on lenses directly and get a cheap body, with digital crap you’ll change bodies every 2 years but good lense you’ll keep for a while. The 17-40 L would be a good start, very good solid sexy phallic lens…

YF: it amazes me how you come up with these things.. no offense, but were you on anything? i must say that this time it felt some what lacking without the Guig.. by all means, you were very entertaining on your own.. but the additional comments from the Guig and fuckstress seem to balance out all the “highbrow comedy” a bit better.. and oh, lady chapbottom’s laugh sends a chill up my spine.. might want to think twice before inviting her back again.. well, looking forward to the next one..

Haha, Kragon is perfect as the weather reporter with insights into high culture. I can see him/her having the same complaints as you about the daily grind in Tokyo, yet finds time during the weekend to do something he/she really loves (i.e. baking, eating lost souls, burning up naughty children, sailing, etc.)

I don’t know about you chaps, but I got the distinct impression that when I was listening to Lady Chapbottom… I was listening to the real Yongfook.
My guess is she won’t be making a return because the emotional truth of that character ran a little too deep for comfort. Kraagon is clearly a projection of unfettered, id-broadcasting masculinity that Jon yearns to be, but to do so he must repress and deny Lady Chapbottom’s existence. I feel a thesis coming on…
