Podcast No.1!

Oh god. Bandwagon. Jumped. On.

It’s time for yongfook.com to change. It’s been 3 YEARS of text blogging. YEARS. That’s just wrong in so many ways. So firstly, the layout has changed - it’s now much more Web2.0 (for those who don’t know, “Web2.0″ just means everything is bigger and more patronising*****), much cleaner and much more in tune with the kind of things I am doing at work. So that’s nice. Ooh and play with the text-size widget in the top-right. Sexy, eh? But ultimately pointless. Hurrah!

Anyway the other big change - I’m going to focus on podcasts now. BUT WAIT - I’m still going to be writing - there is still a “blog” section in the bottom half of this website, so those who refuse to listen to podcasts as you sit infront of your steam-powered computers and habitually curse the “younger generation” and their “gosh darned popular music” fear not; I will still be writing. I just want to branch out a bit. I feel I’m writing too much nowadays, what with the other blogs that I write content for, so I want something a little different for my own site.

Hence, podcasts.

Enjoy.

*for the benefit of those with whom I’ve argued over email about this: it was meant to be a joke.

As a professional web geek, I’m quite aware of what web2.0 actually is. My point was more that with this general paradigm shift that we are seeing with web2.0, to make more user-oriented, community-nurturing web applications etc, we are also seeing a noticeable shift in design trends with relation to the importance of obvious visual hierarchies, large, clear typography and somewhat pronounced colours etc etc. Whether that is because of web2.0 (i.e. people making web applications have to make sure people can use them easily, so we have to baby people through new user experiences by using these clearer design elements at the expense of “coolness”) or whether this is just one of those style trends that web design sees every few years (pixel fonts, drop shadows) is a question I cannot answer.

However my point was that since that is now the world I live and breathe pretty much, the layout of my site now reflects those design trends. Because that’s what I like. That is all.

  1. Hi Yongfook, I found your website while surfing around for a place that might distribute authentic Japanese food snacks to my stomach. Well, maybe first to my door and then to my stomach. I love your site and your style and was thinking to myself, wouldn’t it be great if he would do a podcast? And you did! You are unknowingly under my power now. Obey me. Right, anyway, now that I have established myself as a) crazy and b) a stalker I’ll go back reading your blog in the dark. Naked.

P.S. Have you thought about converting your old videos into some videopodcasts?

P.P.S. I liked to your site from my own blog, I hope that’s okay. I wasn’t sure of your policy on that.

  2. I’m confused. I heard zero whales having sex.

    Guig / January 6th, 2006
  4. Guig, do a podcast with me you fuck.

    yongfook / January 6th, 2006
  5. Ok, but can you make me a little bassy thing that i can hit a button to play whenever there’s dead air? I’m ready now…GO!

    Guig / January 6th, 2006
  6. deal.

Actually that’s just me playing the bass. I just pluck harder when I have fuck all to say.

    yongfook / January 6th, 2006
  7. Hahaha, I’m listening to this shit and there actually ARE whales having sex! Best podcast ever. I’ve got this bottle of shouchu and a headset which makes me ready for podcasting.

    Guig / January 6th, 2006
  8. Ooh, very exciting. Where do you find the time for all this? You MUST do stuff on your own website at work when nobody’s looking… I’ve been trying to paint, record music, maintain a blog and do some photography and to use a phrase from the porno industry… I don’t think I can ‘maintain’.

Maybe the days will be longer when I get to Kyoto.

    AndyH / January 6th, 2006
  9. BTW have you heard “Medieval Song” by Gackt? It’s very short but I think you’d like it (and no that’s not what I say to all the ladies).

    AndyH / January 6th, 2006
  10. Never have I been so turned on by an English accent until now

  14. I’m not here to insult your penis or question your heterosexuality, only to say that your music is fucking amazing. It’s very emotional and very moving. I love the six new ones, Walking Dream is nice too, reminds me of Massive Attack.

    fan / January 6th, 2006
  15. There should be a disclaimer on this podcast… “Do not listen to this at work, especially with the sound turned up”. I am so lucky my boss is out of the office.

    CrazyC / January 6th, 2006
  16. Those six aren’t new, they’ve been up for months. Oh dear God I’m a fanboy…

    AndyH / January 6th, 2006
  17. I meant five “new” ones… I had the other two (sakura, walking dream) already. And yes you’re a fanboy. We’re all pathetic here so it’s okay.

    Luke / January 6th, 2006
  23. I’ve been “doing what I usually do” for 3 years now. I need to shuffle things up a bit. Not expecting everyone to like it, but hopefully the people who decide to stay will be the hot ones.

    yongfook / January 6th, 2006
  24. podcast - great idea! Big fonts - A lot of bloody scrolling!

    riceMonkey / January 6th, 2006
  25. Wait, you’re telling me you DON’T have yongfook.com set up permanently displaying on a special PC in the corner - a “shrine”, if you will - with a 20″ monitor?

    yongfook / January 6th, 2006
  26. Pink is pretty merry and gay! Yeay!

  30. Okey Dokey. Not sure if I will like this, but will check out this new-fangled ‘cast’ tonight. Have you upgraded to 2.0 of Wordpress, or are you still using 1.5.2? I am not sure if it is really worth it to upgrade. Templates are basically still the same and all. Well, good luck. If you are as witty in your ‘casts’ as you are textually then you should do well!

    coder.keitaro / January 6th, 2006
  31. I’ve upgraded. Really, the only significant difference for me is the addition of proper spam control out-of-the-box. But actually, that is more than a good enough reason to upgrade.

Other obvious changes are some aesthetic ones to the admin panel, but I hear most of the big changes are under the hood.

    yongfook / January 6th, 2006
  32. Well, I already had Akismet anit-spam as a plugin, as I was drowning in spam long before 2.0 and was desperate for a solution, and I also have a nice admin plugin that makes it look all teh sexah web 2.0. [I HATE that term. It is nothing but marketting crap. It is not like anything has really changed. XMLHttpRequest was implemented back in IE 5.5 and ECMAscript standard was written in ‘99… Okay… breath… make the red go away….] I do like your simplified style. [Single column for content, and two column underneath for everything else! noice!

    coder.keitaro / January 6th, 2006
  33. yeah but web2.0 isn’t just about XMLHttpRequest, I’m sure you know that. More than anything it’s about how people’s attitude towards making stuff for, and using stuff on the web is changing. If you look at where the web is now compared to say 2 years ago, it’s a completely different place. I don’t think it’s marketing doublespeak - at least not on purpose - it’s just an attempt to label a significant archetypal shift in the way things are moving on t3h int@rw3b.

    yongfook / January 6th, 2006
  34. oh and since you have Askimet already then it’s probably not worth upgrading just yet.

    yongfook / January 6th, 2006
  35. Listening allowed me to do other things, so a plus from me.

Your accent is quite magnetic, as well.

    Michelle / January 7th, 2006
  36. ‘make the red go away…’, that one’s a classic!

    Liz, are you my liz?

YF, i can’t wait to go home and check out the ‘cast. I think i might ‘mess’…steady…steady…

    David-MTL / January 7th, 2006
  37. Yo dude,

To be Web 2.0, you must:

    1. Have the word BETA under your branding.
    2. You got the font just right.
    3. You have do drop the vovels of like this : yongfkr or something or mothafuckr
    4. Your domain should have dots in between. yongfook.is.us

Anyhow, I subscribed. Am podcast freak….. need to drive to work everyday, and need new content on my pod everyday. So, there you go. Gluck ;)

    jon / January 7th, 2006
  38. Podcast is great! like the change.. =P

do you just say whatever you want, or there is a script? coz you sound so close to my chemistry lecture, like the acscent. he is cute.

    cynthia / January 7th, 2006
  39. I actually saw whales have sex. Clearly you don’t watch enough Animal Planet/Discovery Channel.

    Alex / January 7th, 2006

  41. My new years resolution is to exercise more and to pick up a new martial art in the prospect of becoming disciplined. Once I have disciplined myself I will have the courage to ask out my crush in my biology class.

    Kj / January 7th, 2006
  42. You must see Woody Allen’s new pic Match Point - the male lead Jonathan Rhys Meyers’ character, Chris, sadly, reminds me of you. Check it out and let me know what you think.

    notacreature / January 7th, 2006
  43. do you just say whatever you want, or there is a script?

I was hoping it would be clear from the shambling display of incoherent and uninteresting mouth-sounds that my podcast represented, that none of it was scripted. Perhaps I’ll prepare a bit more for the next one. And get less drunk. Or get more drunk.

    yongfook / January 7th, 2006
  44. The new layout isn’t friendly to the dial-up internuts I am stuck with away from university. :(

Also…what happened to the January 2002 archives? They are missing…

    Flowering Manhood / January 7th, 2006
  45. I didn’t really design the site with dial-up in mind. Where do you live? Papua New Guinea? In all seriousness though, the new layout actually has less graphics on each page than the previous version, so if anything it should load quicker. Maybe just the fact that the page is longer is giving the illusion of loading slower?

And January 2002 archives? The site wasn’t around then. It started in August 2002.

    yongfook / January 7th, 2006
  46. Sorry! January 2003! My mistake. In any case it had a nice article on your interview process that I read earlier this week and was surprised to find missing.

    Flowering Manhood / January 7th, 2006
  47. p.s. I live on a plantation in the southern state of Virginia, located in the proud Confederacy. I mean…United States. Damn those Union bastards and their high speed connections.

    Flowering Manhood / January 7th, 2006
  48. January 2003 is still there too? It’s in the list…

If you really can’t see it, here’s the link anyway: http://www.yongfook.com/2003/01/

    yongfook / January 7th, 2006
  49. “I didn’t really design the site with dial-up in mind. Where do you live? Papua New Guinea?”

I spit wine. It wasn’t pretty. And I know you were just kidding. Going to go drink more wine now.

    Michelle / January 7th, 2006
  50. The Papua people…maybe people aren’t going there. It doesn’t sound like the best place…I can’t imagine it having a tourist board, or anything, right?

    Guig / January 7th, 2006
  51. Good move with the podcast thing. I’ve been reading on and off for a bit, actually a potential JET and occassional visitor to BD, and was cued into your site by a fellow potential JET and occasional visitor to BD. It’s cool that you’re trying something new like this. Cheers!

BTW - Belated congratulations for the success of that photo essay about web page design a few weeks back.

    Onipengin / January 7th, 2006
  52. Just listened to the ‘cast’ and I have to say …

    Hilarious

    Keep it up.

    But drink more wine!

    coder.keitaro / January 7th, 2006
  53. I’m at home…drinking…by myself…on a saturday night. So I’m going to have to ask you to update more frequently. You see my life…my life is slipping into a very sad state. And the only thing that can take my mind off it is digital stimulation and whale sex. God, that’s not even true. What the hell is wrong with me?

    Guig / January 8th, 2006
  54. Ditto Guig. I’ll go numb my emptiness with LOTS of alcohol and then distribute naked pictures to strangers kthxbai.

    Fuckstress / January 8th, 2006
  55. funny, and great recording by the way. where was this done? studio? there was hardly any ambient sound. mind sharing your recording set-up?

    Nick / January 12th, 2006
  68. Well, with 67 replies I find it hard to believe that no one has bothered to reply and let you know when roman times actually was. Allow me: Roughly (!) between 5th century BC and 6th century CE. (If i’m way off, please correct me.)

And I must remark that I quite enjoy your solitary ramblings, please continue.

    Ally / January 14th, 2006
  69. What happened to the exerpt where Yuki was supposed to comment?

    ???

The podcast pretty much ended with the whale music.
