Introducing Sketchplanet.com!!

So this is what I’ve been spending all my time on recently.

Sketchplanet.com is a new web service based around sketches. Taking some obvious cues from Flickr (e.g. tags, ability to comment etc) I’ve developed an online sketching network where people can draw whatever they like, add titles, comments, tags, save favourites and more - it’s all rather nifty, I think.

Think of this as the beta version. There are still some teething problems (probably not displaying perfectly in all browsers yet - nicely compliant browsers such as Firefox and Safari should be fine though) and some features are still to come (larger sketchpad, erasing favourites, erasing comments etc) but I think this is a good start. Go and have a play. You need to register for all the features (registration is very basic, just a first name, email and desired username are required) but don’t worry, even when you are registered you can still opt to sketch stuff anonymously ;)

Here are a few screenshots, although it’s probably better if you just check out the site itself.

Enjoy, and let me know of any problems you encounter with the site.

Cheers!

View popular sketches at a glance

Every sketch gets it’s own page, with a comments section

A Weighted Tag List ™ - tags that are used more often appear larger

You can also search for stuff

All registered users get a “My Page”, enabling you to keep track of comments on your sketches and also view your favourites

Favourites view

Blog syndication - get a sketchplanet sidebar for your blog. Registered users can choose between a sidebar that shows the last 5 public sketches, or one that shows only your last 5 sketches

Hope you like it! (and tell your friends, please)

  6. How about you put this in the title of sketchplanet:

x sketches of y total sketches are penisses

    Fun little statistic.

  9. Wow. Programmer to programmer, i’m impressed by your creativity. Very nicely done, YF. Incidentally, I don’t remember my logon info for the forum, could you send it to me?

    David / October 11th, 2005
  10. Now where do we engage in witty repartee? Where be the forum, Yongfook, WHERE?

    Ami / October 11th, 2005
  11. hardly anyone was using it. If you want to talk about something, why not draw a sketch and use the comments section?

    yongfook / October 11th, 2005
  12. An interesting idea and I generally like the implementation.

However, did you have to go for Flickr color scheme? Also, a bigger sketch area a la artpad would work better. But hey, its fun and it works. Grats.

    Alex / October 11th, 2005
  13. the colour scheme and design are really still “beta” features as far as I’m concerned. I just wanted to get the functionality wrapped up in a way that people could use it and then bung it online. After that, I’ll change the design at a later stage, since it’s easy to change visual elements - it’s the technology behind it that was the lengthy part that I had to get right.

And as for bigger sketches…well I’m keeping the small one for now. This was a conscious decision (I mean shit, to make a bigger pad all I would have to do is just go into Flash and make the document size bigger, pretty much) for two reasons:

    1) I don’t want people to have to think too hard about using the space

    2) It would mean more space on my server gets used up.

So for now, I’m keeping the small size, sorry.

    yongfook / October 11th, 2005
  14. I appreciate your concern but honest, don’t worry, there was never any danger of me “thinking too hard”.

    AndyH / October 11th, 2005
  15. You know what I mean - if people have to think, it ruins the spontaneity. I think being able to whip up a stupid picture in 10 seconds is more in the spirit of sketchplanet, at least for now.

    yongfook / October 11th, 2005
  16. I love it and it’s so much fun to doodle when bored and pretend I’m hard at work on the computer. I will pass the link along to friends, good work YF :)

    Maneki Neko / October 11th, 2005
  17. Fab! Oh, and sorry about the non-10-second-stupid-pictures.

alex: thanks for the link to artpad! is much fun.

  18. WOW. @-@ I’m amazed!

    tIng / October 11th, 2005
  19. YF, you tha man. Small sketch pads rule for exactly the reason you said.

    David-MTL / October 11th, 2005
  20. i agree with YF, there hasn’t been a site that offers proper neoprint-doodling so far so for now at least sketchplanet has originality and uniqueness on its side (until it gets immensely popular and then somebody shamelessly does a rip-off of it)

  24. heeheeHEE…I don’t think I’ve laughed as hard for a while as I did when I read Yongfook’s special little ps on the registration e-mail. I don’t mean to be an ass, but I can just picture it…the reply e-mails…teehee - it makes me want to try it.

Got a sql error when I clicked on print. But it still saved the sketch and everything… I will try to remember to save the error if I get it again….

  33. I was probably messing with stuff at the time.

    yongfook / October 14th, 2005
  34. How are people able to draw with such a steady hand? Fandangled new mouse? My sketches look like a kid has drawn them as I can’t steady the mouse enough to draw. Grrr…. Any tips?

    Laura / October 14th, 2005
  35. None, my friend. I’m in the same boat. You can try slowing the sensitivity of your mouse, and use an optical one…but those haven’t helped me.

I had a dream that YF responded to all of my comments. Naked.

    David-MTL / October 14th, 2005
  36. Very. Slowly. I actually prefer non-optical mouses for drawing purposes, but maybe you just have to get used to using one or the other.

    ashan / October 14th, 2005
  37. more cameos!

    h / October 15th, 2005
  38. That link you gave is really good. I tried to create my own also, using a bigger size and rating system at http://www.liliwei.com/drawings/ , but still a fan of yours ;;)

    Liwei / October 15th, 2005
  39. Yes I noticed you spamming the comments at sketchplanet over and over again with links to your site today. Just a friendly warning - that won’t be tolerated. A link here and one link there is fine, but too many (especially as you were simply cut & pasting the same message) will be treated exactly the same way as I treat other comment spammers.

    thanks, YF.

    yongfook / October 15th, 2005
  40. Sorry that wasn’t me, I’ve dealt with that person now - sorry for any problems.

    Liwei / October 15th, 2005
  41. I use a regular old mouse. It’s rollerball or w/e you wanna call it, it’s really old too. Maybe if I get a nice new mouse I can create even better and smoother sketches!? We’ll see!

    szeker / October 16th, 2005
  42. I use the same! Are you thinking of upgrading to an optical mouse? I’ve tried drawing with one, and the results have been less than satisfactory as the mouse can sometimes be oversensitive. Of course, it’s a matter of personal preference, but all the same, I’d advise you to test it out before switching. :)

  48. Actually, good question. I don’t see how this contributes to increasing your fangirl following.

    a / October 21st, 2005
  49. If everyone asked “what’s in it for me” before they started to make something, nothing fun would ever get made.

It’s just a bit of fun, no harm in that.

  53. right… now that last comment scared me more I think. Anyway, nice site! That liwei chick was a bit the scary tho’,… she kept popping up all over. Monthly or weekly challenges for the site would be nice. That way when I’m staring at the screen trying to think of what to draw I’d be able to just do something.

    nishah / October 22nd, 2005
  54. For sketchplanet, you mean? Already done! Go see the sketchplanet blog, dongsap. :)

Oh, and yes, yongfook was quite a bit scarier in that comment than before.

    a / October 22nd, 2005
  55. Ack, sorry. Don’t check up on sketchplanet.com that much because I can’t draw for nuts (or a single nut, for that matter)…

you seem to provoke scariness in people don’t you “a”… :D But i suppose it was warranted tho’…

    nishah / October 22nd, 2005
  56. Think the font about “xx comments” can be a darker grey. Had to squint to see the words. May be just my poor eyesight though.

  57. Thanks for the nice sketch website. I couldn’t find a feedback form on the site. I like the idea of a bar for people’s blogs but I would like to choose which sketchs are displayed on it. Some sketchs are just too awful to be displayed….
