holiday, part 2

The moment I emerged from the arrival hall, I was whisked away by my darling Cheryl to our hotel, in her self-proclaimed ‘ugly pile of shit’ car. I tried to convey that you simply DON’T KNOW ugly and/or pile-of-shit until you have had the misfortune to be driven in or (god forbid) drive my car but the nuance was lost as the car-owning citizens of Singapore by and large have the luxury of possessing vehicles that are actually roadworthy.

The hotel we were staying at for the first part of our holiday was the ’boutique’ hotel, the Gallery Evason. The prefix ‘gallery’ here is has no real meaning as there is exists no gallery of any kind within the hotel. However, the air of pseudo-intellectual swanky ambience created by the name did in fact extend to the exterior and interior of the hotel, which, for want of a more articulate description, was really bloody cool.

The room was large, with a floor to ceiling window making up one wall. The bathroom was en//d in subtly frosted glass, which although aesthetically pleasing whilst vacant, at all other times allowed for the unfortunate ability to see your loved ones taking a crap. All electronics in the room were controlled by a panel by the bed and there was free internet access via an Ethernet port. The hotel pool was constructed out of plexi-glass, and the end portion hung off the roof, meaning pedestrians down below could see our legs thrashing about underwater. Imacs in the restaurant meant those without laptops could still use the internet free-of-charge. Any place that offers Macs for public use automatically gets a gold star in my book.

Our holiday together was mostly made up of eating and shopping, with a bit of dancing and drinking thrown in for good measure. I sorely miss Singapore food and my body craves it nearly every waking moment of my life. Re-occuring conversations that would interrupt our rabid shopping were,

“I want kueh” “lets get kueh”

and,

“ooh that’s a nice bag” “Its mine. I saw it first”

In the next entry - The Turkish Restaurant.
