Halloween

Saturday saw our region terrorized by a gaijin Halloween party.

The party was taking place inside the cavernous abode of a JET in Hitoyoshi city. Her sprawling mansion comes complete with a 2nd floor, garden, courtyard and garage space. Opening random cupboards you will often discover whole other rooms, massive piles of your own jealousy and self-sustained separatist colonies of indigenous Japanese tribes.

People from all over Kumamoto arrived in a variety of costumes, from Monkeys and Penguins to Karaoke booths and Mcdonalds Milkshakes. Being both shockingly unprepared and a prudish Brit, I simply went in my Kendo uniform, proclaiming “oh Im a samurai or something” with a kind of flimsy unease.

Mid-way into the throes of party-like shenanigans, the police knocked on the door. Screaming gibberish at all who would listen (which was everyone, as we were terrified beyond the capacity for doing anything but stare with mouths agape), his imperative tone and sheer volume gave us helpful non-verbal clues as to the subject matter of this one-way discussion.

It turns out that we were being too loud and all the old people that lived in the area who hadn’t already been swept away in a stinking torrent of noise-induced prolapse had been complaining. Since any notion of Fun had been outlawed in Japan since the Meiji era, we were in a bit of trouble. Our wrists were slapped, we turned off the music, and the party was knocked down a few notches on the woohoo-o-meter, but nevertheless a good time was had by all.
