First weekend
A semi-eventful weekend.
On Friday night, the JETs from my area got together for a barbecue in a park up in the mountains, then we all went for Karaoke in the town. This was good fun and gave the new JETs a chance to meet each other and all the current JETs too.
So onto Saturday. It all started with what was quite possibly the most frightening car journey of my entire life. Let me paint a simple picture. You are in a car, driving down a road. Only, the road is made of rocks, is on top of a mountain and is only wide enough for one car - a gaping chasm of death to your left and a jagged, car-unfriendly cliff face to your right. God only knows what you are meant to do if you meet a car coming the opposite way. Presumably one of you is just meant to drive off and die. Luckily, my mantra of “please please please please please” worked very well and we drove through the road without meeting any other traffic.
The point of this? We were going up a mountain to see a waterfall and get a view of the area. The waterfall is apparently in the “top 100 Beautiful Waterfalls in Japan” list. Of course, this means it is down the bottom of the list, otherwise it would have been ‘top 80′ or ‘top 50′. Contrary to my cynicism however, it was indeed very beautiful. Mother Natures urethra.
On Sunday I decided to go to an onsen on my own, partly out of boredom and partly out of sheer foolhardy bravado. As expected, the place was full of naked Japanese men. I expected Japanese men to sort of let their hair down at onsens and run around whipping each others arses with towels, but no - pretty much totally silent. A relaxing end to my second weekend in Japan.
